Polyester
or Epoxi? 
When laminating it´s
essential to realize that polyester and epoxi are two fundamentally
different materials. Polyester is a plastic most often used for
building boats, whereas epoxi. resembles a glue. People often forget
these two materials have different qualities with different reactions
on i.e. heat.
Using an epoxi glue repair on a boat made of polyester often therefore
leads to cracks or bosses. A frequent case is a boat exposed to
sunshine and when the epoxi repair temperature reaches 60 - 80°C
the epoxi mending becomes flexible and that
happens with polyester only at about 200°C.This
incompatibility causes problems at sea
since flexibility in one section of the boat can lead to cracks or
bosses in another, because of greater material stress there.
We
recommend the use of identical materials, which in most cases means
polyester fiberglass laminate (GRP).
Many companies advocate epoxi since it handles more easily
and
that despite the above mentioned complications.
